"My friend Jason had been asking me for two years to attend a BNI meeting and see what BNI could offer my electrical business. Even though I knew my fledgling business needed more momentum, I was reluctant to go down the BNI route as I thought it would be along the lines of the corporate b*llsh*t that I had been part of for 28 years and had changed career 10 years previously to get away from! Eventually he wore me down and I agreed to attend a meeting at Surbiton Golf club at 6.30 on a Wednesday morning in September. From the outset I was pleasantly surprised that the people I met were professional and really friendly without being of the pushy sales variety I was expecting. After my initial visit I went back twice more, once as a visitor and once as a sub, and decided that I would give it a go.
This decision was made easier from the point of view that I had already received some referrals that equated to business that covered my joining fee. With momentum like this I would have been a fool to ignore the opportunity. My first year resulted in £54k of business and I am expecting the second year to be even more fruitful. I was asked and have taken up the position of Vice President and this has led to me getting more involved in the chapter, the chapter getting to know me better and even more referrals and turnover for my business. BNI is fast becoming my main source of business generation so I would be absolutely mad not to renew my seat. "
